Grenada, a grouping of three large islands and several small ones, is located in the West Indies on the Caribbean Sea. Nicknamed the “Spice Islands”, Grenada is famous for its nutmeg, ginger, cloves, cinnamon, and cocoa.
Of the three large islands, Grenada is the largest and is where your holiday will begin. The capital, St. George, is located on this island along with a large tourist area, Grand Anse. Visitors should be prepared for a tropical climate as part of Grenada is a rain forest.
Nutmeg is the cash crop of Grenada and you will want to tour a spice plantation while there. Douglaston Estate, located on the main island, is the oldest spice plantation and offers tours daily. The Gouyare Nutmeg Factory is located nearby and is another must see while on holiday in the Spice Islands.
Grenada is also well known for the rum it produces. Clarke’s Court Distillery and River Antoine both offer tours. You will discover how sugar is used in the production of rum. Both rum and spices are popular items to carry home. All spices must be in airtight containers and it is a good idea to check with the custom office to find the current limits on what you can carry home.
Grenada’s landscape is breathtaking. There are green forested hills and lush valleys. The coastline winds around each island with white, powdery sand. The Grand Etang Nature Reserve is a fantastic way to experience all Granada has to offer. The Reserve is home to the Seven Sisters Waterfalls; seven roaring waterfalls with foot paths to the base. Nearby is the Honeymoon waterfall, hidden in Grenada’s rain forest. Water sports, such as jet skiing and parasailing, are very popular here and are offered at all of the beaches.
Plan to make a stop in a local marketplace for one of a kind treats and souvenirs. The market in St. George has a spice market hall. Some unique items to look for are Nutmed, an ointment made from nutmeg; nutmeg flavored ice cream; real vanilla; and nutmeg jams and jellies.
Your holiday to Grenada will begin as soon as you land at the Port Salines International Airport. Located on the main island of Grenada, the airport is four miles from St. George. Grenada is served by most major airlines including British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and American Eagle. All hotels run shuttle services to and from the airport making for smooth transfers and a great beginning, and farewell, to Grenada.
